Good news. Thanks to Matt Lipsky of the Neighborhood Retail Alliance for letting us know about this. A group called Wal-Mart No Way has made a TV commercial called The Real Costs of Wal-Mart. You can see it on NY1, and you can even download it
from the web site. The press release for the TV commercial follows below. "It shows just how scared people are of Wal-Mart coming into our city," said Daniel Stolzman, the director. Amen.

Anti Wal-Mart TV Ads Targeting Bloomberg Begin
Community Group and Labor Leaders Unveil 30 and 60 Second Ads Produced by Volunteers, Call on Mayor to Oppose Wal-Mart
Joined by community and labor leaders, www.Wal-MartNoWay.org unveiled an anti-Wal-Mart television advertising campaign today. The ads will run on NY1, primarily in the morning. The ads will also be distributed in a MoveOn style e-mailing to thousands of internet activists. The ad ends by urging viewers to call Mayor Bloomberg to say that "Wal-Mart is a bad deal for New York".
Titled "The Real Costs of Wal-Mart," the ad, in both a 30 and a 60 second version, shows a shopper at a cash register. As the shopper’s items are scanned, the cash register shows the "Real Costs" of Wal-Mart, instead of the items’ dollar prices. As items are scanned, viewers see graphics including "Small Business Destroyed", "More Traffic", "Union-Busting", "Discrimination Against Women" and "Trade Deficit" paired with visuals.
"Whether it’s discriminating against women and immigrant employees, destroying small businesses, causing traffic jams, denying its employees health care coverage, busting unions, using sweatshops and child labor, increasing our trade deficit, fleecing taxpayers, you name it… if it’s unethical, Wal-Mart does it," said Pete Sikora, a volunteer with www.Wal-MartNoWay.org "Wal-Mart is a bad deal for New York, and we urge Mayor Bloomberg to oppose them."
The ad was produced by volunteers who raised money, filmed and edited the ad. Over 350 t-shirts were sold and over 1,000 people gave small donations on the street. In addition, UFCW Local 1500 gave a $2,000 donation. The time and talent of the production team was donated, as was much of the equipment involved.
"This ad is not a typical political ad. It is shot and edited with the same level of quality that a major corporation would pay for, except we did it all on volunteer spirit. It shows just how scared people are of Wal-Mart coming into our city," said Daniel Stolzman, the director.
www.Wal-MartNoWay.org was joined by a range of organizations in unveiling the ad and calling on Mayor Bloomberg to oppose Wal-Mart, including the Brennan Center for Justice, Jobs with Justice, the Neighborhood Retail Alliance, the New York City Central Labor Council, RWDSU, UFCW, and the Working Families Party.
