Brooklyn, NY -- November 6, 2005 -- "When Democrats and Republicans work in tandem to undermine our democratic institutions in the service of corporate entities, they are no longer two parties but one which fails to serve the will of the people," said Gloria Mattera, Green Party candidate for Brooklyn Borough President.
"Marty Markowitz has abandoned his charter and constituents by aligning himself with Bloomberg, Pataki and other pro-corporate officials in support of unfettered development," added Mattera. "Time and again he has sided with the Republican mayor and governor who have undermined or ignored the community processes that exist to oversee development. With Markowitz’s support, downtown Brooklyn and the waterfront are poised to become private enclaves for the rich and powerful while longtime residents are pushed out of neighborhoods they’ve lived in for decades."
For example:
-- Markowitz supports the Nets Arena development plan with luxury housing supported by Bloomberg and likely to be approved by Pataki that is exempted from the city’s comprehensive Uniform Land Use Review Procedure.
-- Markowitz supports the latest Brooklyn Bridge Park plan with luxury apartments supported by Bloomberg and Pataki that has replaced the earlier plan without apartments that had community input.
-- Markowitz supports the IKEA plan in Red Hook supported by Bloomberg that has disregarded the community's 197-a plan for Red Hook approved by the City Council and City Planning Commission with public input.
-- Markowitz supports the Williamsburg waterfront rezoning for luxury housing (with amendments) supported by Bloomberg that has overrided the community’s 197-a plan for development approved by the City Council and City Planning Commission with public input.
"The Green Party is the only viable choice for voters in the Brooklyn Borough President’s election next Tuesday," said Mattera . "Only my campaign offers voters the opportunity to elect someone who will stand with communities against developers, and who will use the powers of the borough president for the benefit of residents, not real estate magnates and other corporate interests."
